Hi and thanks for your mention.

I am pretty sure that the reason the library blogs directed at end users don’t experience huge success is the fact that you really don’t want to read a blog written by “a library”. I think a blog written by a librarian to end users could be more interesting – but he/she would stand out as a private person having an attitude and a personality – and thereby changing the traditional and impossible role of the objective and neutral librarian. It could be interesting to see the experiment – but then again: Why have bloggers paid by the state when people can blog themselves?

I definitely think that the way to go is to “communicate” (or really: deliver the content) through the OPAC. People want the library to deliver the information they need and want – not oppinions. That’s exactly why we started to develop Summa (the search system you mentioned). We really need a flexible “opac” that searches multiple sources and interconnects pieces of information in a relevant way. We’ll open source the Summa search system in the beginning of 2008 and we’re looking forward to it.

/Jens
